Evolution of John Barrymore's Ghost Costume

Inspired by John Barrymore's original Hamlet costume, this design meticulously reimagines his iconic theatrical presence using CLO3D for digital draping and prototyping. By digitally sketching over renderings, I refined the proportions and placement of trims, focusing on how the tunic and cape would elegantly fall. Constructed from stretch velvet for the tunic and hand-pleated cotton for the collar, the ensemble ensures both comfort and fluid movement during fight scenes, capturing the ethereal essence of Barrymore's ghostly Hamlet. This design honors classic Shakespearean aesthetics while incorporating contemporary functionality, blending historical reverence with innovative design.

Evolution of Andrew Rally's Hamlet Costume

Andrew Rally's Hamlet costume reflects a modern, over-adapted portrayal by a jaded soap actor reluctant to embrace the theater. To capture this essence, I focused on over-exaggerated Shakespearean elements, utilizing rich fabrics and layered, anachronistic styling. The design process involved alternating between 3D Drapes and 2D illustrations to iteratively build the costume's complexity. The fitted jerkin, made from high-gloss metallic brocade and faux yak fur, paired with a neck ruff in metallic silver lamé, embodies the character's contemporary yet disconnected interpretation of Hamlet, merging classic elements with a bold, modern twist.
