Vintage French Sailor Uniforms for Dynamic Performances
The Maltz
Blending Tradition with Movement

For the Maltz's production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, we drew inspiration from vintage French sailor uniforms to create costumes that blend historical authenticity with modern functionality for dance. By first sketching each piece to achieve a precise fit, I digitally draped classic sailor tunics using CLO3D, ensuring the garments retained their characteristic gentle looseness and sculpted lapels. Key to the design process was modifying the seaming to shift stress points and adding gusset seams where needed, enhancing the flexibility and durability required for extreme movement. The resulting costumes feature traditional materials and a crisp, nautical color palette, merging aesthetic appeal with practical design. This approach not only honors the iconic French sailor look but also adapts it to meet the dynamic demands of a contemporary theatrical performance. Through innovative digital techniques, these uniforms challenge conventional costume design, offering a fresh reinterpretation that supports the fluidity and energy of dance.
